The Head of the State Environmental Inspectorate of the Polissya District, Yevhen Medvedovsky, participated in a field meeting of the Temporary Special Commission of the Verkhovna Rada, focusing on the issues affecting people affected by the Chornobyl disaster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The meeting was initiated by Arseniy Pushkarenko, Chairman of the Commission, and his Deputy, Viktor Myalyk. Among those present were the First Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada, Oleksandr Kornienko, the Commissioner for Human Rights, Dmytro Lubinets, as well as representatives of the Ministries of Social Policy, Internal Affairs, the Pension Fund, the Governor of the Rivne Region, Oleksandr Koval, the Chairman of the Regional Council, Andriy Karaush, as well as delegates from other regions: Zhytomyr, Volyn, Kyiv and Chernihiv. The meeting’s experts were specialists from the State Environmental Inspectorate of Ukraine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The main topic of discussion was the issue of public distrust in the procedure for updating dosimetric passports of settlements. People expressed concerns that the authorities may underestimate radiation levels, which in turn threatens to cancel benefits for Chornobyl victims.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The meeting participants emphasized that any changes to the assessment of radiation levels should not compromise citizens’ rights and should be as transparent as possible. Formal procedural changes should not be allowed to deprive liquidators or displaced persons of support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
One of the key issues was the underfunding of pollution inspections. Of the 927 settlements subject to inspection, about 200 received funding. Without such inspections, communities cannot effectively utilize their lands, which leads to economic stagnation, reduced tax revenue, and investment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The meeting also emphasized the need not only for inspections but also for investment in the restoration of ecological systems so that residents can see that life is returning even to areas affected by radiation contamination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The meeting took place on Heroes’ Day. Before it began, the participants honored the memory of those who died for Ukraine by observing a moment of silence and laying flowers on the Alley of Fallen Heroes.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
