In modern Ukrainian schools, not only the level of education, but also the psycho-emotional state of students is increasingly discussed. One of the most prominent figures in this discourse was the director of a Lviv school, Natalia Shcherbanenko, who in an interview with the LUKI publication criticized the system of assessment and children’s participation in competitions, particularly in the younger grades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to Shcherbanenko, grades in the first to fourth grades are not needed at all. She believes that students should compare their achievements only with their previous results, and not with the successes of their classmates. “The level of knowledge in itself does not determine anything. Parents want to see scores, but this is a misconception about the purpose of education,” the director notes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
An important topic of discussion was the participation of children in Olympiads and other competitions. According to Shcherbanenko, such competitions often have a negative impact on the psychological state of children. “When a child participates in an Olympiad, they focus too much on winning, losing interest in the subject itself,” she emphasized. In her opinion, the school should focus on developing the skills to express their thoughts, conduct discussions and find their own path, rather than competing for medals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The director also noted that it is important to pay attention to children who remain in the shadows during group work, theater performances or dance classes. She believes that these children may feel inferior because they do not receive the same opportunities to stand out. At a younger age, children are not always able to adequately perceive these situations, which can negatively affect their self-esteem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
There has long been a debate in the educational space about whether it is worth instilling a spirit of competition in children from an early age. Supporters of educational reforms emphasize that learning should focus not on competition, but on developing interest, creativity and self-confidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Recall that the teacher also shared comparisons between Chinese and Ukrainian schoolchildren, drawing attention to strict subordination, upbringing, and discipline.
