According to WHO reports, Ukraine ranks 39th in the world in terms of cancer prevalence, with an indicator of 200 cases per 100,000 people annually. This trend continues to grow. To learn more about innovative approaches in cancer treatment and expected achievements in this field, we spoke with Yuliy Honskyi, a leading expert and president of Honskyi Scientific.<\/p>\n
Yuliy, in your work, you are involved in the development of innovative cancer treatments. How are they different?<\/p>\n
I have over 18 years of experience in clinical research, collaborating with several countries in Eastern Europe, and I have devoted a lot of time to immuno-oncology. This approach aims to activate the body’s natural defense mechanisms to combat cancer. However, we faced a problem – side effects, in particular, cytokine storm caused by therapeutic agents. I am currently actively working on solving this problem, and I am confident that we will soon find practical solutions.<\/p>\n
You have recently published papers in leading scientific journals. What new information has been learned as a result of these studies?<\/p>\n
In my publications, I investigate the nature of cytokine storm and its control. An essential biomarker of inflammatory processes that cause this condition is homocysteine, a sulfur-containing amino acid. Elevated homocysteine \u200b\u200blevels can worsen outcomes for both cancer patients and those who have suffered severe forms of COVID-19, increasing oxidative stress and inflammation. Thus, monitoring homocysteine \u200b\u200blevels is an essential step in the diagnosis and development of new treatment approaches.<\/p>\n
What prompted you to pursue scientific activity?<\/p>\n
My educational background and extensive experience have provided a strong foundation for my scientific work. I hold two master’s degrees in medicine, an MBA, and a certificate as a Clinical Research Associate. Over the years, I have combined science with business, teaching, and managing a biochemical laboratory at Ivano-Frankivsk University. I have always strived to improve medicine, focusing my efforts on development, not just profit.<\/p>\n
You worked at Roche, working on Angelman syndrome. What are your achievements in this area?<\/p>\n
I led projects aimed at solving problems related to Angelman syndrome, a condition that causes severe developmental disorders in children. The pathology is associated with the absence of a particular gene on chromosome 15, which occurs as a result of a defect in maternal DNA. Roche was working on a molecule capable of activating the so-called “hidden” gene of paternal DNA to improve the condition of such patients.<\/p>\n
You were recently accepted into the American Cancer Society. What does this mean to you?<\/p>\n
For the past two years, I have been developing my own business in the United States and collaborating with companies such as Neumora Therapeutics. Membership in the association allows me to interact with American colleagues, exchange experiences, and share new scientific achievements. The association, which has existed since 1907, unites researchers and specialists who have made a significant contribution to the fight against cancer.<\/p>\n
Your work as a reviewer in scientific publications – what is it about?<\/p>\n
Reviewing is an independent assessment of scientific articles that are proposed for publication. I need to assess the quality and timeliness of the data presented. This is especially important in medicine, because other specialists can use research. My mission is to ensure a high standard of publications, as well as to gain new knowledge about the directions of development in medicine.<\/p>\n
