At the beginning of 2023, Comfy CEO Igor Khyzhnyak noted that the company had no communication with state authorities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“We have no relationship between the authorities and the company,” he noted in a video message.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Later, on behalf of the company, a different position was voiced: Comfy representatives claim that the state loses more than 10 billion hryvnias in VAT every year due to the activities of the “gray” market for equipment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“We drew attention to the scale of the problem: annual budget losses on the “gray” market exceed 10 billion hryvnias for VAT alone. After that, the tax service began intensified inspections of the largest retail chains,” Comfy said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
However, it was in 2023 that the company became the object of attention due to suspicions of tax evasion. According to information from the Prosecutor General’s Office, Comfy used a tax scheme that led to a significant illegal reduction in tax liabilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“According to the transactions for the sale of electronic book sets ‘Comfy Books’, taxes were evaded for UAH 46,025,245,” the department reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The scheme was quite ordinary: part of the cost of goods, for example, smartphones, was issued as a service, which allowed avoiding the payment of value-added tax or applying reduced rates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It should be noted that after the violations were discovered, Comfy was not subjected to any sanctions, except for paying taxes. This caused indignation among market representatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Against the background of these events, Igor Khyzhnyak’s statements about the fight against “black” imports and the desire for transparent company operations are perceived skeptically. Many small market players believe that these words are just an attempt to divert attention from their own issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“It is known that representatives of young companies believe that the main initiators of the attacks on them are ‘Comfy’ and the official Apple distributor in Ukraine, ‘Azbis,'” the publications note.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Against the backdrop of the tax scandal, Comfy’s rhetoric exemplifies double standards. On the one hand, the company declares the fight against the shadow economy, and on the other, it uses its own tax optimization schemes.
