In conditions of war and the absence of proper social guarantees, more and more Ukrainians find themselves below the poverty line. Older adults who are forced to live on minimum pensions deserve special attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On the air of “Ukrainian Radio”, the head of the behavioral economics department of the Institute of Demography and Quality of Life Research of the NAS of Ukraine, Lyudmila Cherenko, highlighted the critical situation in Ukraine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to her, since the beginning of the full-scale war, the poverty level in the country has increased 1.7 times. If in 2021 about 26% of the population was below the poverty line, then by 2023 this figure reached 35.5%. By 2024, the situation remained stable, which indicates a freeze in these indicators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The rapid growth of extreme poverty is also worrying: the number of people surviving on minimal means has increased almost 8 times, and these means barely provide basic physiological needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Before the war, children were considered the most vulnerable, but now the situation has changed:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
9% of Ukrainians live on the verge of physiological survival;
Most of them are older adults who receive a minimum pension of about 3,000 hryvnias.
Due to the lack of indexation of pensions and opportunities for additional earnings, these people have become virtually defenseless.
Thus, almost every tenth pensioner survives on payments that are insufficient even for food, let alone medicines, clothing, and utilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
