The threat of radiation danger at the Zaporizhzhia NPP has prompted Ukraine to appeal to international partners urgently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Kyiv plans to begin repairs to the backup power supply line, but will demand safety guarantees for Ukrainian specialists from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and Western allies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Zaporizhzhia NPP is currently in a highly critical state \u2014 it operates exclusively on generators, which is a temporary and dangerous solution. As Deputy Minister of Energy for European Integration, Olga Yukhymchuk noted that none of the generators or the station itself is designed for long-term operation in such conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe have information that recently, Russian troops repaired one of the generators, which broke down,\u201d she noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ukraine lacks complete information on the technical condition of the equipment, and it is unknown how long the generators will withstand the load. The worn-out equipment, lack of preventive maintenance, and inability to carry out scheduled repairs make this situation even more dangerous. In the event of a generator failure, the nuclear fuel-cooling system may fail, threatening an accident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At the direction of President Zelensky, the Ministry of Energy and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs are negotiating with international partners to raise awareness of the critical condition of the Zaporizhzhia NPP. Ukraine is ready to begin repairs, but only on condition that Russian troops do not threaten the specialists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Nuclear energy expert Olga Kosharna notes that Ukrainians should not panic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe claims about a possible disaster are exaggerated. The most important thing is to prevent Russia from connecting the Zaporizhzhia NPP to its energy system. The information campaign being conducted by the Russians is aimed at putting pressure on Ukraine through the IAEA. However, the situation remains under control – even if all 20 generators fail, the plant will be able to operate for another 30 days,” she assured.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
