Law enforcement agencies are investigating the death of a 62-year-old patient who was being treated at a private clinic in Odessa. On the instructions of the Prosecutor General’s Office, two doctors were suspected of improper performance of their professional duties, which led to a fatal accident (Part 1 of Article 140 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The investigation revealed that from May to October 2024, the patient, the owner of a significant development and media company, received medical care for cancer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to the conclusions of the commission’s forensic medical examination, during treatment, the medical staff did not take the necessary measures to respond to dangerous complications, which led to the development of sepsis and the patient’s death against the background of the underlying disease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Experts confirmed that the tragedy could have been avoided if appropriate diagnostics and treatment had been provided.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As a result of the investigation, the surgeon and the oncologist were charged with breaches of professional duty, leading to serious consequences for the patient. This article provides for a penalty of up to 2 years’ imprisonment, with possible deprivation of the right to hold certain positions or engage in medical practice for up to 5 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A motion is currently being prepared to impose round-the-clock house arrest and temporarily suspend the suspects from performing their official duties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The pre-trial investigation is being conducted by the Main Investigation Department of the National Police of Ukraine with the support of the Department of Strategic Investigations.
