US President Donald Trump is considering various options for securing control of Greenland, including the possibility of using force, the White House said on Tuesday, amid calls from European leaders who warn that such actions could damage the foundations of NATO.<\/p>\n
White House spokeswoman Caroline Levitt noted that Trump has repeatedly stressed the importance of Greenland to US national security. She said that the president and his team are discussing various strategies to achieve this foreign policy goal, in particular, the possibility of using military force, which always remains at the president’s disposal.<\/p>\n
After a successful operation that removed former Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro from power, Trump asserted the right of the United States to take measures to protect its interests in the Western Hemisphere, including possible actions against Colombia, Cuba, Mexico, and Greenland.<\/p>\n
It is worth noting that the US President’s statement has raised concern in the Scandinavian countries and across Europe, especially amid efforts to strengthen defenses amid threats from Russia.<\/p>\n
A possible US invasion of Greenland, which is part of Denmark, could be a serious violation of Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty, which stipulates that an attack on one member of the Alliance is considered an attack on all. Such a step towards Denmark’s territorial sovereignty by the US, whose mark on the NATO map they are trying to match, calls into question the sustainability of the transatlantic Alliance.<\/p>\n
Trump believes that Greenland’s accession is vital to US national security. Denmark has previously expressed its readiness to strengthen the US military presence on the island, but, according to media reports, Trump is not considering options that do not involve complete control by Washington.<\/p>\n
