The history of this holiday is rooted in pre-Christian traditions. It had many names: Maslenitsa, Zapusti, Kolodiy, Cheese Week, or Babsky Week, and was associated with saying goodbye to winter and welcoming spring. The end of winter, which brought cold and hardship, has always been perceived as a time of joy.<\/p>\n
After the adoption of Christianity in Russia, the church authorities included Maslenitsa in the calendar, trying to give this pagan holiday a new meaning. However, ancient traditions remained popular even in the Christian period.<\/p>\n
Maslenitsa is celebrated not only in Ukraine but also among many Slavic peoples, including Bulgarians, Slovenes, Poles, Macedonians, and Czechs.<\/p>\n
Maslenitsa Celebration in Ukraine<\/p>\n
In Ukraine, Maslenitsa is associated with fun and the observance of certain rituals. The most active celebration is widespread among women. During this period, men were supposed to show respect for women, avoid conflicts, and support them in various forms of entertainment.<\/p>\n
Girls showed their sense of humor by “peniting” unmarried young men by tying wooden logs to their feet and forcing them to walk like that until the young man either acknowledged his choice of bride or treated the girls to delicacies. This encouraged young people to start families before Lent began.<\/p>\n
During Maslenitsa, married women gathered to perform traditional rituals with logs. Each day of the holiday had its own symbolic meaning: Monday – “birth”, Tuesday and Wednesday – “christenings”, Thursday – “death”, Friday – “funerals”, and Saturday – “mourning”. Sunday became the culmination of the celebrations.<\/p>\n
The main attributes of Ukrainian Maslenitsa are dairy products: cheese, butter, and milk, which symbolize well-being and satiety. Traditionally, vareniki were prepared in Ukraine with cheese and sour cream (and not pancakes, as is believed in Soviet traditions). Pancakes, cheese casseroles, and pies were also popular. Jellied meat, stewed cabbage, cabbage soup, and fish borscht were often found on the festive table.<\/p>\n
