The Presentation of the Lord is one of the oldest holidays in Orthodoxy and, in 2026, will fall on February 2. According to church tradition, this holiday carries much more than just religious rites.<\/p>\n
This day is a symbol of the interweaving of Christian beliefs and pagan ideas, reflecting fear of the elements and, at the same time, hope for light. People believed that the Presentation was a moment when the world was between darkness and warmth.<\/p>\n
The main symbol of the holiday is a candle, which is consecrated during the service. At this moment, it is considered a sign of God’s light, which dispels fear and inner doubt. In folk tradition, the candle became a talisman; therefore, the Presentation candles, known as thunderous, were considered powerful protection against bad weather and evil forces.<\/p>\n
They were kept as a treasure, decorated with ribbons and herbs, and used only in emergencies – during a storm, illness, or in prayers. A consecrated candle was not just an object, but a symbol of hope and spiritual protection.<\/p>\n
During the festive service, the priest reads prayers to consecrate the candles, which become a sign of God’s grace. Not only are prayers important, but also an inner feeling: peace, concentration, and respect for traditions.<\/p>\n
The Glormich candle was recommended to be stored in a cool, dry place, with respect and care, because it served as a source of support in difficult times.<\/p>\n
But no less important is the second part of this holiday – water. Stretenskaya water had enormous importance and was considered as valuable as baptismal water. It was not only taken from the temple, but also collected from icicles that began to melt. This water was considered very pure and healing.<\/p>\n
It was used for healing and protection, blessing warriors and travelers, and was also a symbol of protecting livestock at the beginning of the spring season. For our ancestors, it was a universal magical force that protected them from all evil throughout the year.<\/p>\n
The Meeting in Ukraine has always been perceived as a holiday at the intersection of two worlds. It was also called Gromnitsy or Zimobor. February 2 was imagined as the day when winter and spring meet in a symbolic battle – the weather on this day foreshadowed who would win.<\/p>\n
The church successfully adapted this ancient holiday, endowing it with Christian meaning. Thus, the holiday became the moment of humanity’s Meeting with the Savior, which became a symbiosis of religious and folk traditions.<\/p>\n
During the Meeting, there were its own superstitions. On this day, it was considered important not to miss the service and leave the temple without a consecrated candle. People avoided hard physical labor and long journeys, considering bad weather a sign of an unsuccessful journey. It was also forbidden to quarrel or raise negativity – after all, the Meeting symbolizes light and positivity.<\/p>\n
The signs of the holiday also had their own meaning. For example, a clear starry sky on the night of the Meeting promised a bountiful harvest, and calm weather was a sign of a good year for bees. There was even a common saying: “If a rooster drinks water from a puddle on the Meeting – wait for the cold.” It meant that even if the warmth came early, winter had not yet fully awakened.<\/p>\n
