Today, according to tradition and UN resolutions, the “Olympic Truce” should have begun worldwide. However, the realities turned out to be completely different: Russian missiles continue to fly, and international sports officials continue to pretend that nothing is happening.<\/p>\n
Public figure and politician Mykola Tomenko has sharply criticized the International Olympic Committee (IOC), comparing the current situation to the darkest moments in sports history.<\/p>\n
Sacred principle and modern barbarism<\/p>\n
Tomenko noted that the idea of “Ekeheiria” \u2014 a sacred truce \u2014 has existed in Ancient Greece since the 9th century BC, when everyone pledged to lay down their arms. Currently, this principle is cynically ignored by one country.<\/p>\n
“Among all the states that most cynically violate the principle of the OLYMPIC TRUMPET, the Russian Federation remains,” emphasized Mykola Tomenko.<\/p>\n
He cited five examples in which the Russian Federation used the Olympic Games as a cover for its military aggressions:<\/p>\n
2008 (Beijing): invasion of Georgia.<\/p>\n
2014 (Sochi): annexation of Ukrainian Crimea.<\/p>\n
2022 (Beijing): start of a full-scale invasion of Ukraine.<\/p>\n
2024 (Paris): active resistance to the ceasefire at the UN.<\/p>\n
2026 (Milan): another refusal to implement the ceasefire resolution.<\/p>\n
The Shadow of 1936 and “Neutral” Athletes<\/p>\n
Tomenko also takes a very negative view of the fact that, despite the aggressor’s open cynicism, the IOC and the International Paralympic Committee continue to look for opportunities to return Russian and Belarusian athletes to international competitions. He notes that about 20 “neutral” athletes have been admitted to the 2026 Games, and about 40 to the Paralympics, among whom may be those who directly participate in hostilities.<\/p>\n
Mykola Tomenko draws parallels between modern sports officials and the founders of the Olympic movement, who once collaborated closely with the Nazis.<\/p>\n
“The leaders of the IOC and IPC should remember a historical lesson: the founder of the modern Olympic movement, Pierre de Coubertin, showed excessive support for Hitler during the 1936 Olympics in Berlin. And only after World War II was the IOC forced to officially admit its mistake in supporting the Nazi regime,” he emphasized.<\/p>\n
Financial interests over ideals<\/p>\n
According to Tomenko, international sport has become a business in which the ideals of peace and humanity are sold for large sums. He claims that the heads of sports federations have become “salaries” for whom financial gain is more important than Olympic values.<\/p>\n
“Unfortunately, we have to state that for officials of the international Olympic movement, money has become more important than the ancient principles of Olympism,” the politician concluded.<\/p>\n
Today, a week before the start of the Games, Ukraine and the world are once again witnessing how Olympic ideals are used as a convenient cover for aggressors, and international organizations become their tactical allies.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
