Tymoshenko, despite the pressure, remained the only real opponent of Yanukovych and received 45.47% of the vote, while Yanukovych’s officially declared victory of 48.95% was contested as fraudulent.<\/p>\n
Election Consequences
\nThe 2010 elections had disastrous consequences: key sectors of the economy came under the control of oligarchic groups linked to Moscow, and the army and state structures ceased to function effectively. Ukraine lost control of its sovereignty, which led to a political and economic crisis that lasted almost a decade.<\/p>\n
