No matter how carefully you select seeds and care for plants, you can encounter great difficulties due to one important factor – the soil.<\/p>\n
It is the basis for the crop. If the soil is dead, too acidic, or dense, the plants will not be able to develop: the roots are weak, growth slows, and good fruit will have to be forgotten.<\/p>\n
The right soil for seedlings is not just ordinary land. It should be light and airy, with a good ability to retain moisture but not turn into a puddle. The roots should have access to air, and the soil should be close to neutral in pH. It is also important that the mixture does not contain weeds, larvae, or pathogens, since young plants are very vulnerable, and even a minor infection can destroy them in a matter of days.<\/p>\n
Ready-made soils from stores can save you time and nerves – most of them undergo sterilization and quality control procedures. However, choosing the first offer that comes along is like playing the lottery. High-quality soil should be fresh, loose, and free of a musty smell and suspicious consistency. The main components should be peat or coconut substrate, with a small amount of sand or leavening agents, and a moderate amount of nutrients. Excessive amounts of fertilizer can be more harmful than their lack – this can lead to plant weakening.<\/p>\n
Experienced gardeners often prefer to prepare the soil themselves to maintain complete control over its composition. Usually, they combine garden soil with peat or coconut substrate, a little sand or perlite, and compost or biohumus. The result is a light, nutritious, and “living” mixture. The main rule is to avoid fresh manure, unrotted plant residues, and suspicious soil with weeds.<\/p>\n
Disinfection also deserves special attention. If the soil contains garden soil, it must be cleaned of possible pests. The easiest way is to let the soil freeze, then process it in a warm room before using it. An alternative is biological preparations that restore balance, filling the soil with beneficial microorganisms that displace harmful bacteria and fungi. Watering with these solutions is done a few weeks before sowing, and then the soil has time to “come to life”.<\/p>\n
