Ukraine is planning to introduce a system to combat drones, which will include various technologies – from combat lasers to interceptor drones, as well as ground-based robotic complexes and missile simulators. Journalist Simon Schuster reported this in an article in The Atlantic.<\/p>\n
He noted that the demonstration of one of the prototypes was striking in its simplicity. The equipment shown by the military was mounted on the roof of a pickup truck. It visually resembled an ordinary telescope with cameras rather than a complex weapon from a science fiction movie.<\/p>\n
During field tests, a target drone was raised. When the system was aimed, the operator gave the command to fire. After just a few seconds, the device flared up, as if struck by an invisible, powerful reaction, and fell to the ground.<\/p>\n
This Ukrainian development was called Sunray. The publication emphasizes that such systems are not unique: for example, the US Navy uses the Helios laser, developed by Lockheed Martin, to protect against air threats.<\/p>\n
The developers of the Sunray system, about which there was no public information before, claim they created this technology in about 2 years for less money. The estimated cost is several hundred thousand dollars per unit.<\/p>\n
Deputy Commander of the Air Force Pavlo Elizarov explained that the main factors in wartime are speed and protection, not commercial interests.<\/p>\n
In addition to laser technologies, Ukrainian manufacturers are also working on other projects. For example, the P1-Sun drone interceptors are being produced via 3D printing and have already entered mass production. According to the publication, these devices have been used to destroy many targets, including hundreds of attacking drones.<\/p>\n
Such systems should be deployed nationwide and activated immediately upon detection by radars.<\/p>\n
The future \u201canti-drone dome\u201d may include carbon-fiber replicas of missiles and wheeled robots equipped with remotely controlled weapons. The main priority for engineers is protecting units and logistics in combat zones, as well as protecting civilians living near the front line.<\/p>\n
