The escalation of the conflict in the Middle East has the potential to affect prices in Ukrainian stores.<\/p>\n
According to analysts, the fastest price changes can be seen in vegetables, while the cost of other goods will increase with some delay. The main factors of influence are energy and logistics aspects. With the rise in oil prices on international markets, the price of fuel increases, which directly leads to an increase in the cost of transportation, storage and delivery of products. As a result, not only logistics costs increase, but also the prices of the goods themselves.<\/p>\n
In addition, the situation is affected by risks for maritime transportation. Due to the escalation of the military conflict, delays in transportation and an increase in the cost of cargo insurance are possible, which is ultimately reflected in the final prices of products.<\/p>\n
Domestic factors are no less important. Over the past month, the dollar exchange rate has increased by approximately 1.4%, and the cost of fuel in Ukraine has already increased. This automatically causes an increase in the price of imported goods. The situation is also difficult for Ukrainian producers, since a significant part of the necessary materials \u2014 from seeds to packaging materials \u2014 is imported.<\/p>\n
Buyers of greenhouse vegetables, in particular tomatoes and cucumbers, will feel the changes first. More than 80% of these products are imported from Turkey, so any changes in transportation costs are quickly reflected in the price tags.<\/p>\n
In February, prices for these vegetables were already quite high: wholesale prices for cucumbers ranged from 135 to 165 hryvnias per kilogram, and tomatoes cost between 120-140 hryvnias per kilogram \u2014 these are some of the highest rates in recent years.<\/p>\n
Other goods, such as meat and dairy products, may react to price increases in 1-3 months. This is due to the availability of feed stocks and long-term contracts, which restrain price increases for some time.<\/p>\n
A separate factor is electricity. On world markets, the cost of diesel fuel has increased by about $280 per ton, which could lead to an additional 13 hryvnias to the cost of a liter in Ukraine. Currently, the price at gas stations has increased by about 6 hryvnias per liter, but with new supplies, a further increase is possible.<\/p>\n
Previous reports that familiar products may become luxuries are becoming more relevant, as prices tend to rise.<\/p>\n
