In March, the hryvnia in Ukraine experienced a significant weakening, which was marked by an increase in the dollar exchange rate. This process, as representatives of the National Bank of Ukraine noted at a briefing, was mainly due to the aggravation of the situation in the Persian Gulf, which affected the rise in energy prices and increased demand for foreign currency among importers.<\/p>\n
Deputy Chairman of the NBU Yuriy Geletiy said that at the beginning of the year, exchange rate fluctuations were traditional for the season. In January and February, the hryvnia weakened somewhat due to large state budget expenditures, but then the situation stabilized, and the regulator hoped for the strengthening of the national currency in March. At the same time, new external factors, in particular, military actions in Israel and the United States against Iran, made their adjustments.<\/p>\n
Against this background, demand for currency increased, especially from importers who are faced with increasing costs due to rising world prices for oil and gas. In addition, the strengthening of the dollar on international markets also contributed to this process.<\/p>\n
Heletii also drew attention to the fact that the demand for cash currency among the population has increased significantly: if in February the average daily demand was approximately $25 million, then by mid-March it had grown to $45-47 million.<\/p>\n
Despite the increase in demand, the National Bank considers the situation to be under control. Heletii emphasized that one of the main tasks of the regulator is to increase the flexibility of the exchange rate, which will allow the economy to respond more effectively to various challenges.<\/p>\n
NBU Chairman Andriy Pyshny noted that support from European partners is important for maintaining stability. Since the beginning of the year, Ukraine has managed to receive about $5.5 billion in international assistance, which allowed it to finance priority budget items and create reserves for the future.
