Traditional medicine has long been considered the primary source for useful advice on treatment and health promotion. Many traditional recipes are passed down through generations, but not all of them are safe. Some treatment methods originated in times when medical knowledge was limited, so today they can be dangerous, especially for children.<\/p>\n
The famous Ukrainian pediatrician Yevgeny Komarovsky has repeatedly emphasized that home treatments are often not only not beneficial, but can also cause harm. Among the most common are rubbing alcohol at high temperatures, wearing “garlic amulets” to prevent infection with viruses, and warming with a hot egg.<\/p>\n
Rubbing alcohol at a temperature<\/p>\n
This method is often used to quickly reduce fever in children. Although the skin does cool down, as the alcohol evaporates and takes away heat, this effect is only superficial. The internal temperature remains elevated, so the fever does not actually disappear, it is only masked.<\/p>\n
In addition, alcohol is toxic to the body. In children, it can be absorbed through the skin and enter the body when inhaling vapors, which poses a risk of intoxication and poisoning. The use of this method is very doubtful.<\/p>\n
Garlic as a “protection” against viruses<\/p>\n
Garlic pendants for children can still be found in kindergartens and schools, as it is believed that their pungent smell repels microbes. However, in reality, viruses are transmitted through droplets of saliva when coughing, talking or breathing, and are not affected by odors.<\/p>\n
The only effective way to reduce the concentration of viruses in the room is regular ventilation and maintaining proper air humidity. On the contrary, the strong smell of garlic can irritate the mucous membrane, cause sneezing and even allergic reactions.<\/p>\n
Although garlic does contain substances that can suppress microbes, their effect is manifested only with direct contact in high concentrations. Therefore, wearing an “amulet” around the neck does not provide protection against diseases.<\/p>\n
Hot egg for inflammation<\/p>\n
Another popular method is warming with a boiled egg. It is applied to the nose for sinusitis, to the ear for otitis media, or to other pain points. Heat can indeed temporarily reduce pain and relieve muscle tension, because the egg acts as a small heating pad.<\/p>\n
However, this method does not eliminate the cause of the disease. Moreover, in purulent processes, warming can contribute to the spread of infection and worsening of the condition. Using this method without prior diagnosis can be especially dangerous.<\/p>\n
