Kyiv is facing a growing threat of a serious energy crisis as it prepares for the heating season. Maksym Bakhmatov, head of the Desnyanskyi district administration, said that key heat and power facilities have been severely damaged, which could lead to a heating blackout for many city residents.<\/p>\n
In particular, we are talking about CHP-4, which is completely destroyed, and CHP-6, which is estimated to be about 80% damaged. These thermal power plants provided heat to large areas, including Desnyanskyi, Dniprovskyi, and Darnytskyi.<\/p>\n
Approximately 1.5 million people and about 2,000 residential buildings are at risk. If alternative sources of heat and electricity are not found, the city may face not only heating blackouts, but also water and sewage outages, which could be life-threatening in severe frosts.<\/p>\n
Observations of the winter of 2025\u20132026, when the temperature dropped to -25\u00b0C, revealed the vulnerability of the centralized system, which most affected residents of the left-bank districts of the capital.<\/p>\n
The main challenge remains dependence on large CHPs as the sole source of heat. In this regard, a transition to a hybrid model is being considered, which involves the creation of local generation systems.<\/p>\n
In particular, it is planned to install modular boiler houses near central heating points and launch local systems for residential buildings and social infrastructure. Gas and alternative energy sources can be used as backup options, as well as the mandatory introduction of generators.<\/p>\n
Special attention is paid to the development of cogeneration plants that can simultaneously produce heat and electricity.
