In Kyiv, law enforcement officers discovered an organized criminal group that was extorting money under the guise of fictitious “crypto loans.” The criminals created a complex system of pressure that ranged from financial manipulation to psychological pressure, forcing victims to pay money even after the “repayment” of fictitious debts.<\/p>\n
According to information obtained during the investigation, the fraudsters disguised their activities under the guise of the Bitcapital and Crypsee platforms, offering supposedly legal loans in cryptocurrency. In fact, it was a carefully thought-out scheme for repeated extortion. This was reported by the Kyiv police.<\/p>\n
After the “loan” was issued, clients began to receive illegal interest. Even after returning the funds, they were presented with new financial claims, inventing additional debts, as a result of which the victims found themselves in the trap of constant payments.<\/p>\n
Use of bot farms and blackmail<\/p>\n
One of the key components of the criminals’ activities is a large bot farm, which included about 6 thousand SIM cards. Thanks to this scheme, mass calls were made, messages were sent, and compromising content was distributed.<\/p>\n
The pressure was exerted not only on borrowers. Using the victims’ personal data, the criminals contacted their families, friends, and colleagues, which significantly enhanced the effect of blackmail and forced people to comply with the demands.<\/p>\n
Call center operation and disguise<\/p>\n
The attackers organized a full-fledged infrastructure, which included a call center in Dnipro. Employees acted according to pre-prepared scenarios, posing as employees of foreign companies, using fictitious names, and changing voices.<\/p>\n
To disguise illegal activities, companies registered in the UK and Cyprus were used. The technical base included SIM banks, specialized software for mailings, and uninterruptible power supply systems, which ensured the constant operation of the schemes.<\/p>\n
Searches and legal consequences<\/p>\n
During the investigation, law enforcement officers conducted numerous searches in Kyiv and Dnipropetrovsk region, during which phones, computer equipment, cash, documentation, and thousands of SIM cards were seized.<\/p>\n
Seven members of the fraudulent group were suspected of committing crimes related to extortion in particularly large amounts and coercion to fulfill obligations. The court chose a preventive measure in the form of detention with the possibility of posting bail. The maximum penalty for them will be up to 12 years of imprisonment with possible confiscation of property.<\/p>\n
