Both leaders, US President Donald Trump, and Chinese President Xi Jinping, are demonstrating a lack of willingness to compromise in a trade war that could lead to serious economic consequences and increase the risk of conflict between Washington and Beijing.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is reported by the Washington Post.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not so long ago, after Trump introduced new tariffs, which he described as &#8220;Liberation tariffs,&#8221; the US administration focused its attention on China. If Trump had earlier accused other countries of &#8220;economic parasitism,&#8221; the conflict has now turned into an uncompromising fight with Beijing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In response to the US actions, China announced an increase in tariffs on all American goods to 125%, calling Washington&#8217;s actions &#8220;economically senseless.&#8221; Xi Jinping called on European countries to unite with China against Trump&#8217;s &#8220;unilateral bullying.&#8221; The day before, Trump announced an increase in tariffs on Chinese imports to 145%\u2014the fourth round since his inauguration on January 20. Although the US excluded popular electronics, including the iPhone, from the tariff hike, the general strategy remained unchanged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Experts believe the current escalation of the conflict goes beyond simple trade disputes. &#8220;We have already entered the economic gap zone,&#8221; said Jude Blanchett of the Rand Corporation. Despite attempts at diplomacy, Beijing no longer believes that relations can be stabilized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The exchange of economic blows is taking place against the virtual cessation of contact between the leaders \u2014 Trump announced the end of all negotiations with China. In response, Beijing warned that it &#8220;will not succumb to pressure and blackmail.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">China has already developed several countermeasures, including new tariffs on American goods and restrictions on American companies. Despite attempts by former Chinese Ambassador to the United States Cui Tiankai to resume dialogue with the new administration, the results have remained invisible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beijing sees this as an attempt to humiliate China. &#8220;Bullying and hostility is how we see the situation,&#8221; said one Chinese official.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meanwhile, Trump is seeking support from allies. Over the next three months, he intends to conclude agreements with 75 countries to create a coalition against China and prevent tariff evasion through transit countries. In 2018, Chinese companies used Vietnam and other countries as intermediaries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, the financial forecasts for China look bleak: Goldman Sachs has lowered its estimate of China&#8217;s GDP growth from 5% to 4%. In the United States, analysts are warning of the possibility of a recession, given the &#8220;transitional difficulties&#8221; that Trump himself mentioned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The longer the conflict lasts, the more likely it will affect other aspects, including the Taiwan issue. In 2020, the trade deal between the countries effectively collapsed, and the current escalation is reminiscent of the period of Trump&#8217;s first term.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;This is a conflict between two confident leaders who believe they can win. Therefore, the likelihood of further escalation seems almost inevitable,&#8221; comments Yun Song of the Stimson Center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite this, Beijing officially leaves the &#8220;door open.&#8221; &#8220;We are ready to negotiate.
