Ukraine has been at war for four years, and society has become divided. The split concerns a much larger problem\u2014morals. Politician, public activist, and military and aerial reconnaissance officer Ihor Lutsenko emphasizes that the reluctance of influential people to participate in hostilities is society’s “deepest moral fault.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Lutsenko draws attention to the fact that none of the country’s richest and most famous people participated in the war. Not a single representative on the front line is on Forbes’ top 100 list. Many try to maintain their status by receiving a salary or remaining aloof from the real fight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The military notes that the absence of famous politicians and showbiz stars in the war introduces a certain dissonance into society. “The large-scale problem is that the most influential people are not fighting. Currently, almost none of the pop stars are participating in hostilities, and even those trying to appear in the army continue to fulfill their political duties,” he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to Lutsenko, the “cream” of the state ignoring the situation forces ordinary Ukrainians to seek ways to avoid mobilization. “Ordinary people see what is happening at the highest levels and understand that they need to either escape or come up with a way to evade it,” he notes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The number of draft evaders, according to Lutsenko, exceeds the number of service members. “Those who decide to commit an offense have a better chance of being punished than evaders,” he notes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
To solve this problem, Lutsenko calls for decisive action. He believes that the president should clearly state: “Whoever does not go to the front\u2014we will imprison him. If you do not go\u2014we will confiscate your assets.” This, he says, is the “mobilization of the top,” which is necessary to preserve the state. Without an example from the authorities, trust in the government will be irretrievably lost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Lutsenko also believes that the state is approaching a critical moment when either external factors (for example, an attack from Belarus) or internal pressure will force the authorities to act differently. “When the Russian columns begin to approach Kyiv again, the situation will force people to organize themselves without bureaucracy,” he concludes.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
