Fines without warnings: police impose sanctions on drivers after a routine conversation

In Ukraine, the number of cases where drivers receive fines for offenses they were unaware of is on the rise. Lawyers warn that such situations are increasingly becoming part of fraudulent schemes, particularly in areas near the front.

The scheme of action looks quite simple. Patrol officers stop motorists at checkpoints or during routine document checks. After a short conversation, the driver is released. Still, later, he receives a notification via the “Diya” application or other official platforms about the fine imposed — for example, for lack of insurance or another offense that was not discussed during the stop.

Experts emphasize that such actions are a violation of the law. Administrative proceedings must be held in the presence of the driver, and the police are obligated to explain the nature of the offense, read the driver’s rights, and provide the driver with the opportunity to express their opinion. All actions must be recorded in the protocol and not drawn up improperly with a retroactive date.

Unfortunately, complaints to the police often do not lead to a result – the decisions remain in force. Lawyers advise that you should immediately go to court to cancel such tickets. Additionally, it is worth demanding an internal investigation into the actions of the inspectors.

Lawyers also recommend recording all conversations with the police on video from the moment the car is stopped. This is not a violation of the law and can become key evidence in the event of a dispute. The presence of a video recording usually deters officials from unlawful actions.

Do not forget to check the car before the trip, as incomplete formalities may result in your driver’s license being revoked.
