Scammers have become more active: Ukrainians are reminded of calls “from the bank” and fake payments

In 2025, Ukraine is experiencing a worrying trend: although the number of fraudulent actions with payment cards has decreased, the overall financial losses from these crimes have increased. The National Bank of Ukraine reports that Ukrainians suffered losses in the amount of about 1.4 billion hryvnias, which is 24% more than last year.

In total, about 256 thousand cases of fraud occurred in the country, which is about 5% less than in 2024. However, the average amount of losses from one illegal transaction increased from 4247 hryvnias to 5536 hryvnias, which was the main reason for the overall increase in financial losses.

The most vulnerable area remains the Internet, where 83% of all fraudulent actions occur. Criminals actively use social engineering methods, manipulating people and deceiving them into disclosing their bank details.

Among the most popular fraud schemes are fake social security payments, where victims are sent a link to enter personal data. Another common tactic is phone calls from supposedly bank representatives, during which the fraudsters ask for card details and one-time codes via SMS.

Also gaining popularity is the “easy money” scheme, when victims are offered simple tasks on the Internet, first paying small amounts, and then asked to make “investments”, after which they disappear without a trace.

Recently, cases of fraud related to the reissuance of eSIMs have become widespread. Having gained access to a phone number, attackers can log in to online banking, apply for loans or make purchases.

A separate problem is the situation with Ukrainians abroad: if a mobile number is not used for a long time, the operator may transfer it to another user. In this case, criminals gain access to banking services if the number is tied to an existing account.

To protect your finances, experts advise never to disclose your card details, passwords or verification code to third parties. It is important to avoid suspicious links, even if they look official.

It is recommended to use a personalized SIM card, activate additional protection for your mobile number and immediately block the card in case of any suspicions or loss of the device.
