The first day of Trinity honors the entire Holy Trinity. The second day, June 9, is dedicated to the Day of the Holy Spirit, and the third day, June 10, also celebrates the Feast of the Holy Trinity. Due to church traditions, the celebration lasts three days, so Green Weekend is on June 11.

What are Green Holidays? This is, in particular, the Mermaid Week, which precedes the Holy Trinity. At this time, according to popular belief, nature blooms, and the souls of the dead return to earth to visit the living. People tried to appease them by decorating their homes with greenery and conducting various rituals.

Before the Trinity, it was customary to thoroughly clean homes, sprinkle the corners with holy water, and decorate them with branches of birch, linden, and fragrant herbs, such as mint. These plants are considered amulets that protect against evil spirits and diseases.

Green Week carries a spiritual component of purification. At this time, it is essential to pray, ask for forgiveness, and connect with God. Even if it is not possible to visit the temple, it is worthwhile to find time for solitude and turn to God. It is expected that sincere prayer acquires extraordinary power during these days.

During this week, the memory of the dead is also honored. On Thursday, the eve of Trinity, Orthodox Christians visit cemeteries, clean graves, and decorate them with wildflowers.

During Green Week, girls traditionally turn to natural fortune-telling, as it is believed that at this time, one can learn about one’s fate and evoke love.

During Green Week, it is essential to maintain inner purity and observe specific prohibitions. It is not recommended to organize loud parties, abuse alcohol, engage in quarrels, or work in the garden. There is also a belief that bathing during these holidays is dangerous, as water spirits can allegedly drag a person into the water.
