Wild horse death in Chernobyl: Exclusion Zone continues to be dangerous after occupation
In the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone, a tragic case occurred: Przewalski’s horse, which belongs to the endangered species, died as a result of an explosion of an explosive device left by Russian troops.
The State Border Service of Ukraine reported this. The explosion occurred near the Ukrainian-Belarusian border and was documented using acoustic surveillance. Later, an animal’s mutilated body was found near one of the abandoned forest routes where Russian occupation units were previously stationed.
The border guards point out that the animal was likely to come across explosives left by aggressors at the beginning of a full-scale invasion. Despite the retreat of Russian troops, the remnants of mines and ammunition continue to pose a danger.
Przewalski’s horse is the only wild subspecies of horses in the world. This species is not domesticated, but it has a distinctive coloration with pastel shades and a dark stripe along its back. Since the early 1990s, efforts have been made in Ukraine to reintroduce this species into the wild in the Chornobyl zone. Today, there are approximately 150 individuals left in the wild, and each loss is of great importance to scientists and ecologists.
Now, the area of the exclusion zone remains closed to visit. It is dangerous not only because of radiation but also due to the presence of contaminated areas.
There was also a rescue operation in Romania, where the Ukrainians with disabilities were helped.
