Air Defense Volunteers at the Front: Why Those Who Want to Help Are Now Being Mobilized into the Armed Forces

A recent order from the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine has raised concerns among members of the voluntary formations of territorial communities (VFTG), particularly those actively involved in air defense.

Who is subject to mobilization?

The General Staff has directed the territorial recruitment centers (TCK) to mobilize all volunteers from the DFTG who:

Do not have an official deferment or armor;

Meet the age and medical criteria;

Are subject to conscription by current legislation.

Yes, if you are a volunteer without legal confirmation of your status, you may be called up to the army, regardless of your contribution to defense measures.

Reasons for concert

Some of the volunteers are already involved in the work of mobile fire groups (MFGs), which fight enemy drones and missiles. They have undergone specialized training, have combat experience, and possess the skills necessary to work in challenging conditions.

However, the new directive does not adequately recognize the importance of these specialists, leaving them in limbo without due consideration for their achievements and expert training.

What happened?

According to the document, the mobilization was supposed to be completed by May 30, but only units were mobilized. The General Staff initiated an internal investigation to identify the reasons why the order was not implemented in the proper volume. The deadline for implementing the directive has been extended.

Why is this important?

Mobile fire groups are not just volunteers with weapons. They are an essential element of defense against drones, which are increasingly attacking Ukrainian settlements. Together with the regular units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and the National Guard, they create a strong defense for the country.

If volunteers are mobilized without considering their specializations, this may negatively impact the effectiveness of the air defense system, especially in regions where drones pose a significant threat.

It is also worth noting that changes in the punishment for mobilization evaders are being considered by new draft laws.
