The Witcher 4 developers revealed new details about the game’s creation: PC gamers are in suspense
CD Projekt RED has officially confirmed that the studio will focus on consoles first and foremost in its development of The Witcher 4. This information was announced during an interview with the company’s technical leadership. This decision was made to avoid the problems that occurred during the release of Cyberpunk 2077.
During a demonstration at the State of Unreal event, the developers showcased how the game appears and performs on a standard PlayStation 5, allowing us to observe ray tracing and a stable 60 frames per second frame rate. This project will be the first that CD Projekt RED will implement on Unreal Engine 5 rather than its own Redengine.
The company’s vice president, Charles Tremblay, noted: “Previously, we started with PC and adapted the game for consoles, but now we are focusing on their capabilities. The lessons learned from Cyberpunk 2077 forced us to change our approach.”
To date, The Witcher 3 has received high praise, while Cyberpunk 2077’s issues with consoles, particularly the PS4 and Xbox One, have led to numerous negative reviews. The game was removed from the PlayStation Store less than a week after its release, and it was re-released to the store only six months after the fixes were implemented. Despite the successful 2.0 update and the Phantom Liberty DLC, the initial launch remained a valuable lesson for the studio.
CDPR Global Art Director Jakub Knapik noted that starting with the console version is a more logical step since “it’s easier to scale the game than to limit it.” At the same time, the studio continues to optimize the PC version to the fullest extent possible.
The developers also assured that PC game fans need not worry, as CD Projekt RED will remain committed to ensuring maximum quality for robust systems. However, developing the Xbox Series S may prove to be a serious challenge.
At the moment, the release date for The Witcher 4 has not yet been announced. The game will be available for PlayStation 5, PC, and Xbox Series X. In addition, CD Projekt RED is also working on a sequel to Cyberpunk 2077 and an open-world remake of the first part of The Witcher.
