Bleeding during sex: when is it acceptable and when should you see a doctor?

Painless bleeding after sex can happen to any woman. Although it is not always a serious cause for concern, ignoring the situation is not advisable.

According to statistics, approximately 9% of women of reproductive age experience this problem. This phenomenon is known as postcoital bleeding, which can manifest as a few drops or a more substantial discharge. The duration of symptoms varies from a few minutes to several hours, and the source is usually the cervix or the walls of the vagina. This can happen to both young women and those who are going through menopause.

Various reasons can cause this phenomenon. The most common is vaginal dryness, which can occur after menopause due to hormonal changes, or as a result of breastfeeding or taking certain medications, such as antidepressants or antihistamines. These factors can lead to the appearance of microcracks, which can be eliminated by using high-quality lubricants.

Other causes include infections (such as chlamydia, HPV, or bacterial vaginosis), ectropion (pseudo-erosion), atrophic vaginitis, polyps, and possible microtraumas caused by intense sexual contact. In rare cases, it can also be associated with cancer.

Risk factors include pregnancy, hormonal changes, menopause, cancer, and sexually transmitted infections.

To reduce the risk of postcoital bleeding, doctors recommend annual Pap smears, avoiding harsh intimate hygiene products, and using moisturizers and lubricants. It is also essential to treat infections promptly.

If bleeding recurs, is accompanied by pain, changes in the cycle, or unusual discharge with an unpleasant odor, you should urgently consult a doctor.
