Buying a compartment for independent travel: clarification from Ukrzaliznytsia and passenger reviews

With the beginning of summer, Ukraine has seen a significant increase in demand for Ukrzaliznytsia trains, as Ukrainians opt to relax at the sea and in the mountains, despite the ongoing military circumstances. However, many are wondering whether it is possible to completely buy out a compartment to avoid the company of other passengers, in particular, if pets are traveling. The company has clear rules, but users’ opinions on this issue are divided.

Can you buy out a compartment for one person?

A discussion opened on the Threads network: one of the girls asked whether it is possible to buy all the seats in a compartment under one name, or if it is better to issue tickets for different people. She was looking for a convenient travel option, but could not find a clear answer in the Ukrzaliznytsia rules.

Different opinions were expressed in the comments. Some users advised to inform the conductor definitely:

“Inform that you have bought out the entire compartment, otherwise the train conductor may understand that there are free seats, and they will put other passengers on board with you.”

And others considered such a decision selfish.

In addition, some users emphasized that buying out an entire compartment at the expense of others is ethically wrong, and suggested creating separate “private compartments” for such requests.

However, users mostly offered practical advice, especially for those traveling with animals.

“It’s better to issue all tickets for yourself. I even called the hotline when I bought tickets with an animal – everything is allowed, as long as the tickets are in the same name. It’s better to add yourself several times in advance in the application if the train is very popular.”

Official position of “Ukrzaliznytsia”

Even with all the discussions, “Ukrzaliznytsia” has a clear position. The official website indicates that a passenger can occupy only one seat on their ticket. However, if there are free seats, the passenger has the right to purchase the entire compartment for a more comfortable journey.
