Світ духовних цінностей: в Україні святкують день етнографа 17 липня

The world of spiritual values: Ukraine celebrates Ethnographer’s Day on July 17

On July 17, Ukraine unofficially celebrates Ethnographer’s Day, a professional holiday for individuals involved in researching, documenting, and popularizing folk culture. This is a day of gratitude for the preservation of our national identity.

Although this holiday does not have official status, it is gaining importance for scientists, museum workers, folklorists, and all those who strive to preserve Ukraine’s cultural heritage. Ethnographer’s Day highlights the significance of studying the folk customs, everyday life, and traditions of the Ukrainian people.

Ethnographers collect unique materials related to embroidery, folk songs, rituals, architecture, crafts, holidays, and beliefs that are passed down from one generation to the next. Thanks to their activities, there are now numerous museums of folk culture, ethnographic exhibitions, and various archives.

Celebrations are held in academic circles, at universities, scientific institutions, and museums. On this Day, conferences, presentations of folklore initiatives, round tables, and ethno festivals are organized.

This Day is designed to remind us of the importance of preserving the living memory of people and respecting authenticity. Distortion of folk traditions or their commercialization is unacceptable because ethnography is based on the principle of respect for authenticity.

Interestingly, there are villages in Ukraine that have become living museums, thanks to ethnographic research, such as Shevchenkove in the Cherkasy region or Opishne in the Poltava region.
