Nighttime explosions in the Moscow region: airspace closed, flights canceled
On the night of July 17, explosions occurred in the Moscow region of Russia, caused by an attack by unknown drones on the country’s capital. As a result, a special security regime, known as “Carpet”, was introduced at Vnukovo Airport.

According to Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin, air defense forces successfully destroyed at least three drones approaching the city. Drone debris fell in several districts, including Zelenograd, Lytkino, Bakeevo, and Alabushevo. Residents indicated strong explosions and power outages. Emergency services are currently responding to the scene.
Arrivals were also recorded in the Tula region, Novomoskovsk, Zelenograd, and Voronezh.
In Voronezh, the local administration reported that at least five drones were shot down. Debris from one of the drones fell into an apartment building, injuring three children. At least four apartments were damaged.
The “Carpet” regime provides for a temporary ban on takeoffs and landings of all civilian aircraft in the area of a potential threat. Due to its introduction, many flights to Vnukovo were canceled or postponed, and some of them were delayed.
The Russian authorities, as usual, did not provide any information about the origin of the drones and did not comment on the scale of the damage caused.
In addition, as a result of attacks by Ukrainian drones, Russia faced serious problems in its transport system. Recently, more than 2,000 flights were canceled or delayed in the country, which caused significant financial losses.
