Opera singer expresses concern over Russian presence in Europe: “They are everywhere”

Lyudmila Monastryrska, a popular Ukrainian opera singer, spoke about the difficulties that Ukrainians face when working abroad after the war. She shared her thoughts in a conversation with media representatives.

According to the singer, Ukrainians tend to avoid cooperation with Russian colleagues, which forces them to refuse many projects so as not to perform together. “Many Russian artists work in Europe, and this complicates our situation, because we deliberately refuse contracts, defending the position of not singing with Russians. Unfortunately, they are everywhere,” Monastrykska noted.

The singer added that Europeans rarely pay attention to the nationality of artists; when choosing them, they are guided by professional qualities. Conflicts on this basis are not uncommon. “In Europe, it is not so important what nationality or religion you belong to. If you are a good professional, work will always be found,” she explained.

Lyudmila also mentioned her success on the international stage, in particular, her performance on the stage of the Metropolitan Opera in 2022 in the role of “Turandot” instead of the Russian singer Anna Netrebko, with whom the theater had to terminate the contract after the outbreak of the war.
