How to grow big and sweet tomatoes using kitchen waste fertilizer

Experts recommend feeding your plants regularly for the best results. Lianne Samuelson, a gardening professional, shares a simple recipe for feeding, which requires only what you probably already have in your kitchen. In her words, “Tomatoes simply love coffee grounds. Using them can help you get bigger and sweeter fruits, and it’s completely free. Even coffee grounds from capsules are not useless if you recycle them to feed your plants.”

Coffee grounds provide a natural acidity that is ideal for growing tomatoes in slightly acidic soil. They also contain about 2% nitrogen, as well as phosphorus and potassium, which are critical elements for plant growth.

Lianne recommends, “To use coffee grounds effectively, take about a cup of the used material and spread it evenly over the soil beneath your plants. Then, gently work the grounds into the top layer of soil. This process helps break down the material and gradually release the nutrients.”

For those who prefer a lighter option, coffee grounds can be added to your compost bin. Over time, the compost will become an excellent fertilizer; however, it’s essential not to exceed 20% coffee grounds in your compost.

Lianne warns, “Too many coffee grounds can make the compost too acidic, which will harm your tomatoes.”
