August 16: Celebration of Christian, folk and world events on this day

On August 16, Ukraine celebrates the Walnut or Third Savior. This holiday has rich traditions that combine church and folk customs. On this day, people carry baskets of pastries, nuts, and fabrics to churches for consecration.

In the church calendar, this date is associated with the Transfer of the Image of Jesus, not made by human hands, to the city of Edessa. According to the old style, August 16 is the day of honor for Saints Faustus, Dalmatus, and Isaac the Confessor.

In folk customs, the Walnut Savior is considered a good time for any work, including harvesting, canning, and needlework. It was believed that everything done on this day would have a positive result. To ensure prosperity, it was advised to perform three critical actions: work in the garden or orchard, bake bread, and share food with relatives. They were also actively engaged in sewing and embroidery, believing that the products would have exceptional beauty.

Based on folk signs on this day, it was possible to predict the weather. A cold wind promised a harsh winter, rain – a wet October, and a yellowed birch – early autumn. If bees and butterflies hid in clear weather, this indicated that changes in weather conditions were likely to occur soon.

Several important events are celebrated worldwide on August 16, including International Homeless Animals Day, Adopt a Pet Day, Kite Day, International Day of the Backward Class, International Male Beauty Day, Pinot Noir Grape Day, and Honey Bee Day.

Among the notable individuals born on this day are the artist Yuri Starostenko, conductor and composer Anatoly Avdievsky, writer Yuri Izdryk, artist Adriana Galetska, as well as the philosopher Wilhelm Wundt, physicist Gabriel Lippmann, writer Charles Bukowski, director James Cameron, and singer Madonna.
