Chornobyl Territories Protection: Eco -inspectors and Law enforcement officers combine efforts to counteract abuse

The Verkhovna Rada’s temporary investigative commission has decided to control abuse in the Chernobyl zone. Ecologists have already noticed cases where contaminated areas have been used for agricultural purposes, which posed a threat to the health of the population. Police, the State Bureau of Investigation and the Prosecutor’s Office will now be controlled by the situation.

Serious problem: who and how used contaminated land

The head of the Polissya District State Inspectorate Yevhen Medvedovsky participated in the field meeting of the Chernobyl Parliamentary Commission. One of the key aspects is the illegal use of radiation contaminated territories.

Medvedovsky reported that more than 33 thousand hectares of such lands have been found in Zhytomyr region, a third of which is located in the most affected by the People’s District. The eco -inspection recorded numerous violations when local councils allowed agro -production in these dangerous territories, making people at risk. Thanks to the intervention of the inspection, these offenses were stopped and the culprit received suspicions.

Joint Monitoring: Formation of New Work Groups

In order to avoid such situations in the future, the commission suggested that regional military administrations create special monitoring groups, which will include representatives of different bodies:

State Environmental Inspection
Office of the Prosecutor General
State Bureau of Investigation
National police
State Consumer Service
State Geocadastre
According to Yevgeny Medvedovsky, “only joint efforts and constant control can protect these territories from abuse.” He expressed his hope that this approach would prevent the illegal use of polluted land illegally and protect the health of people who have become victims of catastrophe.
