Is it possible to postpone the term of study for BZVP in higher education?

A new stage of basic general military training (BGMT) for students is starting in Ukraine. Can young people postpone their completion?

Lawyer Yuriy Ayvazyan reported that his colleagues were approached by a student who asked the following question: “I am 18 years old, I am in my second year of university. It is known that basic military training begins on September 1. This coincides with my summer vacation, and I plan to move to another city at the end of June, allowing the BGMT to begin at this time. I also have a limited fitness for service due to flat feet. Can I postpone the practical part of the training to next year, or not complete it at all?”

According to the lawyer, postponing the BGMT is possible, but this requires obtaining permission from the educational institution. “Permission to postpone the practical part of the training to the next year must be provided by the heads of the higher education institution, if there are good reasons,” he noted.

However, the lawyer emphasized that students cannot refuse to undergo basic training, as this may lead to their expulsion from the educational institution.

Some categories of students, however, may be exempted from the BZVP, in particular:

persons recognized as unfit for military service due to health conditions;

Current or former military personnel, including those who served in other countries before obtaining Ukrainian citizenship;

Students who have already completed basic training and have a certificate in the acquired military accounting specialty.

Earlier, it was stated that only a few are sent to the front, while the majority of those mobilized are left behind.

The issues of fines for refusing to establish Reserve+ and the situation with school closures in Ukraine, as well as alternatives for students, were also discussed.
