Grass clippings as natural fertilizer: turning waste into cost-effective nutrition

Grass clippings are not trash, but a valuable resource for your garden.

There is a common misconception that grass clippings are simply waste that should be discarded. In fact, they are a real treasure if you use them wisely.

The easiest way to benefit from grass clippings is to leave them on your lawn. After mowing, they quickly decompose and return the necessary elements to the soil, including nitrogen, potassium, and phosphorus, while also retaining moisture. This way, you have a natural fertilizer that reduces the need for mineral supplements.

Another idea is to add grass to your compost. If the grass has not been treated with chemicals, you can mix it with dry leaves and branches to create an optimal balance that promotes rapid decomposition. However, if herbicides have been used on the lawn, it is better not to use such compost in the care of vegetables or flowers.

Shredded grass can also be an excellent mulch. A thin layer of grass around trees, shrubs, and flower beds helps retain moisture and suppresses weed growth. However, don’t apply too thick a layer, as this can damage the soil. In the case of flower beds, it’s best to use grass only after composting to avoid spreading seeds.

Interestingly, you can try vermicomposting. Worms turn grass into nutritious humus that enriches the soil and makes it looser. To do this, use only clean grass that is free from pesticides and other contaminants.

Another way to use grass clippings is to make “herbal tea.” Pour water over the chopped grass, let it steep for a few days, then strain and dilute before watering. This remedy effectively saturates plants with nutrients and works faster than regular compost.
