When is Student’s Day celebrated in Ukraine and why January 25 is considered an incorrect date

In Ukraine, Student’s Day is celebrated every year, though not everyone knows its exact date or its historical and cultural significance.

Student’s Day in Ukraine, also celebrated in other countries as International Students’ Day, is observed on November 17. This is an important day for young people.

History of the holiday

This date has deep roots associated with the tragic events of World War II in Czechoslovakia. In 1939, during the Nazi occupation, students, along with teachers, organized a peaceful action in honor of the anniversary of their state’s founding. The protest was brutally dispersed, which led to the death of student Jan Opletal. His death caused a wave of demonstrations and disobedience in society.

November 17 became a day of remembrance because on this day, the Nazis arrested thousands of students, many of whom were sent to concentration camps, and nine of them were executed. Since then, this date has become a symbol of students’ struggle for freedom and has been recognized by many countries around the world as Students’ Day. In Ukraine, the holiday was officially recognized in 1999.

Why is January 25 not Student’s Day?

There is a widespread belief that Student’s Day is celebrated on January 25, on Tatyana’s Day, but this holiday has Russian roots and is celebrated only in Russia. This day is associated with the establishment of Moscow University in 1755 and is traditionally linked to the martyr Tatyana.

In 1860, the Russian Emperor Nicholas I approved January 25 as a universal holiday. Thus, this holiday has no relation to Ukrainian youth and its history.

In Ukraine, Students’ Day is always celebrated on November 17. This holiday is not only full of fun and entertainment but also an opportunity to remember students’ struggle for their rights and freedoms. Modern youth in Ukraine also actively demonstrates their civic stance, giving this day special importance.
