Trukhanov may lose his position as mayor of Odessa – is there a way out?

Odessa Mayor Gennady Trukhanov has not yet been deprived of Ukrainian citizenship, but the matter is currently under active discussion. In particular, the Dumskaya newspaper reports that the commission under the President of Ukraine has decided to deprive Trukhanov of citizenship, but this still needs to be officially confirmed by a decree from Volodymyr Zelensky.

According to Ukrainian law, if such a decision comes into force, the city council must take note of it, and the mayor’s powers will be suspended. In this case, the duties will be performed by the city council secretary, Ihor Koval, who declined to comment, citing a lack of official information.

At the same time, another source claims that the commission has not yet considered the Trukhanov issue. A representative close to the commission noted that no changes have occurred so far.

City council secretary Koval reported that Trukhanov is still in Odessa and continuing to perform his duties. The city hall has not officially received any reports of the loss of citizenship.

Against the backdrop of these events, talk began to arise in Odessa about the possible introduction of a military administration, as has already happened in Chernihiv.

In a recent video address, Trukhanov called the situation a political reprisal, assuring that the grounds for deprivation of citizenship related to an allegedly Russian passport issued in 2015 are false, since at that time he was in Odessa.
