Road marking updates in Ukraine: what does it mean?

New yellow “boxes” have appeared on Ukrainian roads—square grids visible on the asphalt. This is not an aesthetic element, but part of the official markings installed to regulate traffic. It was introduced in accordance with paragraph 1.10.3 of the Road Traffic Rules to organize traffic at intersections and prevent chaos.

The principle of its operation is quite simple: drivers should not enter the painted area if they cannot complete the maneuver safely. If the intersection is blocked, it inconveniences all road users. Given this, the new rule forces drivers to wait up to several seconds before starting the movement, which can significantly reduce the time spent in traffic jams. With the installation of speed cameras, such violations are becoming less common. A fine of 510 hryvnia is provided for driving into a yellow “box” without the possibility of exiting.

This yellow grid serves as a visual signal “stop, think” at the intersection. According to driving instructor Serhiy K., it does not interfere with traffic but prevents situations in which cars stand at intersections, blocking traffic. This scheme was introduced following London’s example and is successfully implemented in cities with high traffic volumes.

Regardless of traffic light signals, exiting the yellow “box” is prohibited if there is no free space ahead. This new marking helps avoid traffic jams in the most problematic areas—near shopping centers, highway exits, and places with complex traffic light phases. One delayed car at an intersection can trigger a “domino effect” that blocks other road users. According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, since the introduction of this marking in October 2021, the accident rate in such areas has decreased.

Drivers should remember that the new rule, which obliges them to comply with the specified restrictions, will come into effect on November 1. Waiting at intersections is not a sign of weakness, but a sign of respect for other road users and your own time.
