”We will not submit”: anti-government rallies against Trump across America
A large-scale wave of protests has unfolded in the United States, with many participants expressing concern about Donald Trump’s attempts to usurp power. Protesters gathered in costumes, with posters and slogans in support of democratic values.
On October 18, protests called “No Kings” took place across the country, gathering more than 2,600 rallies – one of the largest protests in recent years. Millions of people took to the streets, demonstrating dissatisfaction with Trump’s policies, which many consider authoritarian. The actions were held not only in US cities, but also in London, Madrid, and Barcelona.
Organizers, including the progressive network Indivisible, involved more than 300 public organizations in holding these protests.
In Washington, protesters marched to the Capitol, not paying attention to their bright costumes and banners. Many of them criticized the Trump administration’s actions, such as immigration raids, crackdowns on opponents, and cuts to social programs.
The protests received support from prominent politicians, including Senators Bernie Sanders, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and Hillary Clinton. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer declared that “America is a democracy,” while Congressman Hakeem Jeffries described the action as an “American tradition.”
However, Republicans have criticized the rallies, with some, including House Speaker Mike Johnson, calling them “un-American” and others accusing the protesters of inciting political violence.
In addition, on October 15, a plane carrying the US Secretary of Defense experienced technical problems during a flight from Belgium, which forced a rerouting.
