There will be fewer and fewer teachers: an expert explained the reasons, and low salaries are not the only one

A study conducted by the Center for Social Change and Behavioral Economics, with the participation of Deloitte and the OECD, found that 61% of Ukrainian teachers consider low salaries to be one of the most serious problems. For comparison, this opinion is shared by 46% of teachers worldwide.

Only 20% of Ukrainian citizens believe that teachers receive fair pay for their work, while at the international level, this figure reaches 44%.

More than 30% of teachers experience emotional burnout, and 37% note a lack of respect for their profession. Social policy expert Andriy Pavlovsky emphasized that young people avoid teaching due to “uncontrolled behavior of students, indifference of parents, and devaluation of education workers.” Many of those who do choose this specialty face a heavy workload and bureaucracy.

During the two years of the war, about 40,000 teachers left their positions, and by 2030, 40% plan to quit. The main reasons that remain stable are low wages and high emotional stress.

“Unfortunately, in Ukraine, there are fewer and fewer people willing to become teachers. Only 21% of the population considers this profession prestigious, whereas worldwide this figure ranges from 53% to 64%. Only 13% of respondents believe that the state supports teachers, compared to 45% in world practice,” the expert concluded.
