Fraudsters selling prayers created with the help of artificial intelligence arrested in Brazil

In Brazil, 35 people were arrested for organizing a large-scale fraud scheme. For two years, the group sold people prayers created using artificial intelligence. Information about this was provided by the publication Oddity Central.

The scammers operated in the city of Nilopolis, where they opened a call center. Employees called Catholics, listened to their problems, and offered personalized “healing” prayers. They charged about $10 per text, promising that the prayers could cure diseases or improve their lives.

Some consumers were so impressed with the results that they ordered more prayers, while others spent much more money, believing they would receive “divine support”.

The criminals sought victims through social networks. The leader of the group, who called himself a “pastor”, published motivational messages and invited people to seek “revelation”. When the victims responded, the operators offered them “miraculous” texts.

Law enforcement agencies have said that the success of this scam is mainly due to advances in artificial intelligence. The algorithms generated very believable prayers, tailored to the victims’ personal stories, that gave the impression of a “special spiritual power”.

The detainees were charged with fraud and organized crime.

Police also emphasize that such cases are becoming increasingly common. Recently, in Italy, phone scammers used artificial intelligence to imitate the Minister of Defense’s voice and deceive entrepreneurs out of significant sums of money.
