Ukrainians buy potatoes en masse at affordable prices: will there be a shortage in winter?

This year, potato prices have fallen in Ukraine, prompting many consumers to stock up on the vegetable for the winter. However, farmers assure there will be no shortages, although prices may fluctuate, and this depends on factors beyond internal ones.

Recent events in Europe significantly affected the price situation on the Ukrainian potato market. Overproduction in the EU has led to the lowest prices in recent years.

Experts note that prices in Ukraine are traditionally aligned with European levels. In Europe, it is not profitable for farmers to store potatoes, so they sell them at lower prices; Ukrainian potatoes cost 3-5 hryvnias more per kilogram. This may lead to increased imports, further affecting the price policy and forcing Ukrainian manufacturers to compete for consumers.

Despite these circumstances, Ukrainians still prefer potatoes grown in Ukraine. At the same time, the term “Ukrainian potato” is not limited to varieties selected domestically; it must be grown by Ukrainian farmers. Such products are in the most significant demand among the population.

Regarding potato stocks, farmers assure that the situation remains stable. Producers do not see any signs of a possible shortage during the winter period – the harvest meets demand, and logistics processes operate without significant delays. The primary thing consumers are interested in is the price, which may decrease due to imports or remain stable until mid-winter.
