Warning to Ukrainians about a possible transport crisis: which cities will be affected

In Kyiv, two out of six road bridges are in an emergency condition. These are the Paton and Metro bridges, which, according to expert assessments, cannot operate at full capacity and are dangerous. Transport planning specialist Dmytro Bespalov reported on this situation during the “Kyiv Time” program.

The expert noted that when they say the bridge is in an emergency state, it means it is not able to perform its functions to the fullest. However, despite this, the bridges continue to work. And if the problem concerned only these two objects, it would still be possible to survive, noted Bespalov.

He also drew attention to the possibility that similar difficulties may arise at other transport junctions in the city. The metro has also needed major repairs for a long time. According to the expert, Kyiv’s infrastructure requires significant investment to improve.

Bespalov emphasized: “I assess the state of Kyiv’s infrastructure as requiring serious capital investments for repairs.”

Earlier, a journalistic investigation revealed that huge sums are spent on repairing emergency bridges, but the city risks facing a transport collapse. According to their information, more than 2 billion hryvnias were spent on emergency works on the Metro bridge. Still, these funds were used only for temporary strengthening of the structure, which should ensure operation for up to 10 years.

In addition, the investigators found that the Podilsky bridge, intended to facilitate traffic in the capital, became the embodiment of numerous corruption schemes. A record 20 billion hryvnias have already been spent on its construction.
