Romania joins the PURL program: 50 million euros to strengthen Ukraine’s defense
Romania has officially confirmed its participation in the international PURL program, which provides for the centralized procurement of weapons for Ukraine. According to Romanian Foreign Minister Oana Coia, the country will contribute 50 million euros from the approved state budget.
The Romanian government has decided to join the program to develop a Priority Procurement List for Ukraine’s defense needs. The PURL mechanism has received the support of many European allies and partners, and its coordination is entrusted to the United States.
Romania plans to allocate the specified amount to finance Ukraine’s defense within the 2025 budget ceiling, without exceeding the approved expenditures. Coia emphasized that Romania’s participation in PURL will both strengthen Ukraine’s defense capabilities and lay the foundation for lasting peace in the region.
Representatives of the Romanian Foreign Ministry note that participation in PURL is in line with the country’s commitments within NATO and the strategic partnership with the United States. It is important to note that the contribution is part of efforts to ensure regional security.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs noted that Romania’s participation in the program is a joint response to the US initiative and a demonstration of support for efforts to achieve peace. The governments of other countries, including Australia and New Zealand, have also expressed their intention to participate in this program.
Finally, it is worth noting that contributions to the PURL program are essential steps toward improving Ukraine’s defense capabilities in the current situation, particularly given Russia’s lack of readiness for peace negotiations.
