Every year, this holiday “moves” between dates, and at the end of the winter season, many are surprised: the New Year, according to the Chinese calendar, has not yet arrived.

In 2026, the Chinese New Year will be celebrated on February 17. It is on this day that the year 4723, according to the traditional Chinese calendar, will begin. The celebrations will last for about two weeks and will end on March 3 during the Bright Festival of Lanterns.

For China and many East Asian countries, this is not just a holiday, but one of the most significant moments of the year. It is a time when families gather, take stock of the past year, and open up new possibilities. The date of the Chinese New Year varies as it is based on the lunisolar calendar. This holiday falls on the second new moon after the winter solstice. In 2025, the winter solstice occurred on December 21, so the new year automatically “moves” to February. Therefore, the Chinese New Year can be celebrated between January 21 and February 21 and will never have a fixed date.

The history of this holiday goes back thousands of years. Researchers believe its roots go back to the Shang dynasty, to the 14th century BC. At that time, the holiday was closely associated with agriculture and the beginning of spring, so it was given another name: the Spring Festival. It was a time when people gave thanks for the winter and asked for luck for the new harvest.

One of the most popular legends tells of the Nyan monster, which, according to belief, emerged from hiding and attacked villages. People have noticed that Nian is afraid of loud noises, bright lights, and the color red. This is how fireworks, loud celebrations, and red decorations appeared, which today are integral to the Chinese New Year.

The dragon occupies a special place in the symbolism of the holiday – it represents strength, wisdom, and prosperity. Dragon dances have become the showcase of the celebrations and one of the brightest spectacles in the world.

Despite all the celebrations, the Chinese New Year is primarily a family holiday. People come from all over the country to gather together at the festive table. Dishes also have symbolic meanings: dumplings symbolize wealth, noodles symbolize longevity, and fish symbolize financial well-being.

Before the holiday, homes are carefully cleaned, believing that together with dust and old things, failures and problems should be banished. After that, the space is adorned with red lanterns, ornaments, and good-luck wishes. Red envelopes filled with money, given to children and younger family members, symbolize protection and good luck for the whole year.
