Oleksandr Shathin: ”The 2010 elections were a decisive moment that changed the course of Ukraine”
February 7 marks the anniversary of the 2010 second round of the presidential election in Ukraine, a pivotal moment in the country’s history when manipulation, falsification, and disinformation began, laying the foundation for further political instability and dependence on external factors.
This view was expressed by political expert Oleksandr Shatkhin in an article for The Times of Israel.
After the events of 2004, Ukraine was presented with an opportunity to adopt a system dominated by ideas rather than individuals. But by 2010, that opportunity had been lost. The election had become a battle of compromises, where cynical accusations and legal manipulations replaced constructive discussions of economic, security, and European integration issues. Changes to the electoral law after the first round violated the Constitution and created the conditions for large-scale fraud.
Political technologies of Yanukovych’s campaign
Yanukovych’s campaign, using technologies developed by Paul Manafort, was the first case of mass political disinformation in Ukraine. Negative campaigns against Yulia Tymoshenko, involving accusations of ruinous gas contracts and betrayal of state interests, aimed not only at electoral victory, but also at poisoning the information space.
The myth of “unelectability.”
That year, a new narrative emerged about candidates who threatened the interests of the elites, questioning their status as “unelected”. Tymoshenko, despite the pressure, remained the only real opponent of Yanukovych and received 45.47% of the vote, while Yanukovych’s officially declared victory of 48.95% was contested as fraudulent.
Election Consequences
The 2010 elections had disastrous consequences: key sectors of the economy came under the control of oligarchic groups linked to Moscow, and the army and state structures ceased to function effectively. Ukraine lost control of its sovereignty, which led to a political and economic crisis that lasted almost a decade.
Lessons from the past
Memories of February 7, 2010, indicate that elections carry responsibility, and ignoring the lessons of history can have serious consequences for the country’s future. Society and politicians must recognize their responsibility to ensure transparency in processes to avoid repeating past mistakes. Oleksandr Shatkhin emphasizes that Tymoshenko remains one of the few politicians capable of leading peace negotiations and restoring Ukraine’s real sovereignty.
This lesson from the history of the 2010 elections is an important reminder of the price of political decisions and of citizens’ responsibility for the future of the state.
