Wool socks that itch: an easy way to make them softer and more comfortable
Knitted socks are an indispensable accessory in the cold season, especially when frost or power outages make us seek warmth. However, sometimes they can be annoyingly prickly, spoiling the mood on cozy evenings. Fortunately, there is a simple way to help with this, and special products are not required.
The discomfort stems from the structure of wool: its villi are covered with scales that can open when washed incorrectly or in dry air, making the threads stiff. One effective solution is to use hair conditioner.
The structure of wool is similar to that of human hair, and conditioner closes the scales, forming an invisible protective film around each fiber, making it elastic and smooth. Even the simplest conditioners can effectively improve the condition of your socks, unlike ordinary fabric softeners, which act on the surface.
After this procedure, your socks will feel pleasant to the touch, fluff less, and keep their shape longer. This is especially important for handmade products, where every detail matters.
Here are step-by-step instructions:
Prepare warm water: pour about 30 °C water into a basin. Too hot or cold water can damage the product.
Add conditioner – 1 tbsp. spoon of balm or hair conditioner. Mix until completely dissolved.
Soak the socks – immerse them in the prepared water for at least 30 minutes. Then carefully rinse in clean water of the same temperature and squeeze lightly through a terry towel.
Dry properly – spread the socks horizontally on a dry cloth, avoiding batteries and direct heat. Dry proximity to heaters can make the wool brittle and lead to the return of prickliness.
After complete drying, the socks will become silky, and the balm’s light aroma will give a feeling of freshness and comfort. This simple and safe method is suitable for all wool products. Now your favorite knitted socks will not only warm you, but also delight you with their soft texture and neat appearance.
