Raising a child as an “adult”: what consequences does this lead to?

The ways in which the redistribution of responsibilities in the family can affect a child’s development often go unnoticed, although they have serious consequences.

According to psychologists, a sense of “transferred responsibility” arises when a child is forced to take on an adult role. This can manifest itself in the fact that they become a “vest” for their parents – listening to their problems and worrying about their emotions. Children often also perform duties that go beyond their age – preparing meals, caring for younger siblings and resolving conflicts in the family.

Although at first glance this may look like independence, anxiety, a sense of responsibility and neglect of their own needs are forming inside the child. Such children grow up quickly, but often do not know how to live “for themselves”.

In adulthood, this can lead to serious problems: with low self-esteem, difficulties in relationships, a desire to “save” everyone around them and dependence on the opinions of other people. The child gets used to living a life that is not his own.

The reasons for this phenomenon are diverse: there may be difficult life circumstances, illnesses, financial difficulties, or simply the habit of parents to shift responsibilities onto their children. As a result, the child’s childhood begins to gradually fade away.

To prevent such consequences, it is important to set boundaries. Children should refrain from taking on excessive responsibilities and allow themselves to rest, engage in hobbies, and communicate with friends. Parents should not make a psychologist or “universal assistant” out of their child.

It should be remembered that the child’s main task is to grow, experiment, make mistakes, and enjoy life, not to save any of the adults.
